Avoiding Housework

A few nights ago, my husband made a comment to me as we were lying in bed talking to one another at the end of a long day. "I want you to do something for me," he said, "I want you to write a book about us." Well, alrighty then! I was a little taken aback, but I have to admit, it's gotten me thinking. I need a creative outlet for my energy, thoughts, and feelings. I've always loved to write, so I will take baby steps toward that book and start with a blog. Of course, I can think of maybe half a dozen people who are going to be interested in what I'm posting, but that's okay. So here it is.

Today is Friday and the end of another busy week is here. None of the kids has practice tonight for any of their activities, so I will be able to pick them up from school and come straight home. I plan on putting on some music and doing some housework, since I've managed to avoid the majority of it for the past few days. Laundry is caught up and stuff is straightened, but I need to vacuum and dust and sweep...blah blah blah. I know, I know -- I should do all of this stuff while the kids are gone at school all day, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I love having six hours in a row with no interruptions or demands on me, and I take full advantage of it. Yesterday I started a book at 9am with the intention of reading for an hour or so. Needless to say, I was still reading at 1pm. I finished the book, it was interesting. Should I feel guilty about reading a book instead of organizing my childrens' clothes by color and fabric type? Should I feel guilty that I spent a few hours watching a movie instead of scrubbing my kitchen floor? No one seems to mind that the house isn't perfect, so why do I continue to feel conflicted for enjoying my time alone?

Enough about that...this weekend we will be attending McKenna's (age 9) second basketball game. On Sunday, Lance and I are getting to spend a rare day alone! All of the kids are going to spend the day at their various friends' houses and the hubby and I are going into Chicago. We're going to the Field Museum to see an exibit about the Aztecs, and then we are going to hunt down some Chicago-style pizza. I'm looking forward to having time at a museum when I am not counting heads to make sure none of the children have run off. (Our last museum adventure in Chicago was like that. I think I saw three things altogether at the Museum of Science & Industry.) I will put up pictures of our adventures at a later date.
